How The Chairs Are Built...
Only choice Appalachian hardwoods are used in the construction of these amazingly strong chairs. Cherry, black walnut, maple, oak and ash logs are acquired locally and milled into chair stock at the shop. There are no nails or glue in the weight bearing structure of the chairs. The posts are made from wood that is air dried only. The backs, or ladders, and rounds are thoroughly kiln dried before they are driven tightly into the posts with the rounds interlocking. The posts continue drying and shrinking onto the rounds; clamping the chair parts together, getting tighter with age.
Before the chairs are put together each piece is given a hand rubbed oil finish while spinning in a lathe. In this way components of the chairs receive the equivalent of several years of ordinary waxing and polishing. With an oil finish, the natural beauty of the wood is brought out, and the finish is almost indestructible, taking wear and tear without chipping or scratching. Any scuff marks can be removed with a good paste wax and the finish will become deeper and lovelier over the years. The chair seats are a woven textile fiber sealed with a coat of clear white shellac. The seats are very long-lasting, and are easily replaced if damaged.
